Geology
The geology of Priorat is characterized by three tipes of soil predominant:
- On the one hand the Priorat is formed by calcareous soil. It is easily found in the outside ports of the area and in the flat lands in the “Baix Priorat”. The soil is compact. It is rich in carbonate and calcium. That is why it is much valued by formes local wines are quite thick.
- There is also paleozoic soil forming “llicorell” (small flat pieces of state covering the ground) which gives especial characteristic to those wines which belong to DOQ Priorat. This soil makes full-boolied and tasly wines.
- Finally, the Priorat is also formed by granitic soil, specially in Falset and Marçà. It is fertile but permeable. It produces well structured wines, even silky (soft, smooth).
