Geology
The geology of Priorat is characterized by three tipes of soil predominant:
- On the one hand the Priorat is formed by calcareous soil. It is easily found in the outside ports of the area and in the flat lands in the “Baix Prioratâ€. The soil is compact. It is rich in carbonate and calcium. That is why it is much valued by formes local wines are quite thick.
- There is also paleozoic soil forming “llicorell†(small flat pieces of state covering the ground) which gives especial characteristic to those wines which belong to DOQ Priorat. This soil makes full-boolied and tasly wines.
- Finally, the Priorat is also formed by granitic soil, specially in Falset and Marçà . It is fertile but permeable. It produces well structured wines, even silky (soft, smooth).
